FTE象征着学校提交的参与调研的教职工个数：
四星：（创造性、重要性、准确性）达到世界领先水平
三星：达到世界较高水平
二星：达到世界认可水平
一星：达到国内认可水平
u/c ：尚未达到国内水平
数据下面的数字为该领域内被评为该星级的课程在学校所开设的所有该类课程中所占的百分比。也就是说，一所学校达到四星的科目百分比越多，达到U/C的科目所占的比例越少，则该校该领域的研究越卓越。
以电子电气工程为例：从下表可以看出，在电子电气方向，研究较突出的学校（安字母顺序依次）为：巴斯大学，帝国理工学院、利兹大学、曼彻斯特大学、南安普顿大学、谢菲尔德大学、萨里大学、班戈大学等。

在参考星级的同时，也要参考提交的FTE的个数。比如我们可以比较一下萨里大学和班戈大学，同样是3星占40%，4星占30%，但萨里大学提交的导师个数为65.65，班戈大学则只有8个，那么可以判断萨里大学的研究水平是远高于班戈大学的。再看看帝国理工学院，虽说达到4星的百分比为20%，低于上述两所学校，但3星数高达55%，且参与调研的导师个数为44，因此也可以判断帝国理工学院的电子研究水平的确低于萨里大学，但明显高于班戈大学的。另外可以注意到谢菲尔德大学报了两个院系，且都分数很高，因此也可以断定谢菲尔德大学在该领域也是非常有建树的。
这样，通过各种理想的加权，学校的研究水平也是可以排出名次来的。
