Manchester：Weekly Visa Update Bulletin

Visa progress - your web form
As mentioned in the last issue, we have now introduced a form on our website which we would ask you to complete once you have submitted your visa application. Completing the form is a simple process that will only take a few minutes, and will enable us get a clearer picture of how long it is taking our applicants to obtain a visa. Once you have received a decision, we would also be grateful if you could return to the web form on your application to let us know if it was successful.

Translation of documents
We would like to remind visa applicants that if you are using any documents in support of your application which are not in English, these must be translated into English by a professional translator. The translated documents must bear the translator's name, qualification, signature and date as well as a statement confirming that it is an accurate translation of the original text.

If an English translation has been supplied by the awarding institution this must bear a stamp of the institution in English.

Sponsorship letters
If your study is being funded by an official financial sponsor, your sponsorship letter must state that the organisation gives you permission to study in and return to the UK.

Iran - Changes to the visa application process
The British Embassy in Tehran is currently unable to issue appointments to visa applicants. The Embassy remains open and the Visa Section is continuing to process applications previously submitted.

To continue to be able to offer a service to applicants from Iran, the UKBA has introduced the option of applying for a Tier 4 visa in Abu Dhabi (UAE).

Tier 4 applicants wishing to apply in Abu Dhabi will need to make a new application, either online or in person, and will need to travel to Abu Dhabi to submit their documents and undertake biometric finger-scans. Appointments may be necessary and applicants are advised to check directly with the visa application centre.

Please note that for applications made outside Iran it may be necessary for verification checks to be made - potentially leading to longer than normal processing times. Applicants are advised to enquire at the application centre for information on likely processing times before applying.

Update on required financial information
Recently, we have been notified about visa refusals based on proof of maintenance.

Please note that applications made on or before 30 September 2009 will only need to show that the required funds are in the bank account at the time of the application.

In all cases, the documents showing where the funds are held must not be dated more than one month before the date of your application. For example, if you make your application on 15 August 2009, the bank statement must not be dated before 15 July 2009. Please note that under the current rules the funds must be held within an account in the name of the student.

We have, however, been advised that from 21 August, students will be allowed to use bank statements in their parents' name as evidence of funds. We anticipate that the UK Border Agency will be releasing more information on 21 August which we will include in a future issue of this bulletin.
